Rota-Kiwan Picnic Pavilion Project

Our Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club of Kalamazoo are partnering once again to benefit the former Rota-Kiwan Boyscout Camp, now known as the Arthur and Mildred Woollam Nature Preserve

The Rota-Kiwan partnership will fund the construction of a picnic pavilion near the shore. Over the course of three years, each club has committed to raising $5,000 a year for a total of $30,000.

You can be a part of this community legacy!

THE PROJECT

The nature preserve features 212 natural acres with access to Bass Lake and Scouters Pond. Much of the existing hiking trails, parking areas, restrooms, and lake access are already complete. Some of the former scout buildings will offer the space and opportunity for youth programming and family/community gatherings. Demolition of older buildings will enhance the natural beauty of this property.

THE HISTORY

More than 100 years ago, we came together to help form the Boy Scout camp.

In 2021, Kalamazoo County Parks worked with philanthropist John Woollam, the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation, the Parks Foundation of Kalamazoo County, and the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy to purchase and protect the property.

In 2025, we are continuing the legacy of collaborating and preserving our natural spaces for children and adults alike to explore and learn!

THE MASTER PLAN

Curious about the preserve? Check out the Master Plan, which contains information about stakeholders, the project timeline, maps, and more.
